Illinois physician indicted on 13 fraud counts

Illinois physician Mona Ghosh, MD, was indicted on 13 counts of healthcare fraud by a federal grand jury, according to a March 14 report from Fox affiliate WFLD.

Dr. Ghosh was accused of defrauding Tricare and Medicaid — in addition to several private insurance companies — from February 2018 to April 2022 by filing reimbursement claims for services that were either not provided or not medically necessary.

These services included medically unnecessary tests and procedures, telemedicine and office visits in which Dr. Ghosh did not see or speak to the patient and procedures predicated on false diagnosis.

Dr. Ghosh, who owned and operated Progressive Women's Healthcare S.C. in Hoffman Estates, also allegedly obtained $796,000 in fraudulent payments from healthcare benefit programs.

Each count of healthcare fraud may be punishable by 10 years in federal prison.
