Physician Side Gigs, an online community of more than 195,000 physicians, laid out physician on-call compensation statistics in a recent report using data from the group's salary and compensation negotiation databases.
Here are five statistics to know:
1. On-call is mandatory for 75% of physicians.
2. Sixty-five percent of physicians are not being paid for being on-call, while 75% of physicians do call from home.
3. Of the data analyzed, 10% to 25% from-home calls require going in.
4. Paid on-call can bring in an average of $45,000 a year.
5. Here is a breakdown of physician on-call compensation for five ASC specialties:
Anesthesiology:
- 91% of anesthesiologists reported that call was mandatory.
- Only 64% received pay for being on call.
Cardiology:
- 91% of cardiologists reported that call was mandatory.
- Only 36% received pay for being on call.
Gastroenterology:
- 82% of gastroenterologists reported that call was mandatory.
- Only 45% reported being paid for being on call.
General surgery:
- 76% of general surgeons reported that call was mandatory.
- Only 48% reported being paid for call.
Orthopedic surgery:
- 73% of orthopedic surgeons reported that call was mandatory.
- Only 55% reported receiving pay for being on call.
