5 major chief medical officer exits in 2024

Here are five CMO exits that occurred in 2024, as reported by Becker's:

1. Matthew Upton, MD, retired as CMO after 29 years at West Virginia University Medicine's Thomas Hospital in South Charleston. Michael Sitler, MD, took over as CMO and vice president. 

2. Roger Kerzner, MD, left his position as CMO of Newark, Del.-based ChristianaCare Medical Group in June. The reason for the abrupt departure was unknown. 

3. Joseph Kanter, MD, resigned from his role as CMO of the Louisiana Department of Health. Pete Croughan, MD, formerly deputy secretary of the health department, was named interim state health officer. 

4. Anthony Spensieri, MD, stepped down from his role as CMO of Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C. The resignation came after the hospital, owned by Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare, faced scrutiny over its clinical quality and operations. 

5. Robert Pretzlaff, MD, resigned from his role as vice president and CMO of Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Valencia, Calif. Dr. Pretzlaff said he departed to be closer to family in Northern California and has accepted a new CMO role where he will oversee two area hospitals.
