Mark Newberry, MD, a primary care physician in Havana, Ga., is retiring after more than 30 years of practice as the town's only primary care physician, WFSU Public Media reported Oct. 22.
Dr. Newberry will retire at the end of the year, leaving 2,000 patients in Havana and Southern Georgia without a licensed primary care physician, according to the report. Havana Mayor Eddie Bass told the news station he is searching for someone to take over the role.
"Dr. Newberry did house calls for people, but he ended up stopping that," Mr. Bass said. "That was the only service we had for our people, unless you went to the hospital in Quincy, or to the one in Tallahassee."
Havana is offering to pay for the next physician's rent at the town's medical facility and to supply them with free medical equipment to get their practice started.
