$65M worth of physician fraud in 1 month

Here are 7 physicians who have been involved or are allegedly involved in healthcare fraud cases involving approximately a total of $65 million in the last month, as reported by Becker's since July 19:

1. Thomas Andrew Webster, MD, was sentenced to two years in federal prison for conspiring to accept kickbacks through a medical supply scheme that defrauded Medicare and TriCare of more than $14.6 million. 

2. Amr Mohamed, MD, surrendered his license after being sentenced to prison for two years for a $14 million fraud scheme involving medically unnecessary equipment, creams and testing for more than 7,000 Medicare beneficiaries.

3. Michael Lucchesi, MD, was charged with grand larceny, among other crimes, for allegedly stealing roughly $1.45 million by using a business credit card for personal purchases. 

4. Victor Contreras, MD, pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of healthcare fraud for defrauding Medicare out of more than $3 million. 

5. Adrian Talbot, MD, was convicted of conspiring to distribute more than 1.8 million Schedule II controlled substances and defrauding healthcare programs of more than $5.4 million.

6. Claribel Tan, MD, was charged with fraud and tax evasion related to a scheme that defrauded healthcare benefits programs of more than $10 million.

7. Gautam Jayaswal, MD, had his license to practice medicine revoked after pleading guilty to a telemedicine scheme that defrauded Medicare out of about $16 million.
