Here are five physicians at the helm of medical associations across the country, representing several specialties:
Jesse Ehrenfeld, MD. President of the American Medical Association
Dr. Ehrenfeld was inaugurated as president of the AMA in June 2023 for the 2023-2024 term. He is a senior associate dean at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee in addition to holding faculty appointments at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md.
Upon his appointment, Dr. Ehrenfeld became the first openly gay president of the association.
Omar Atiq, MD. President of the American College of Physicians
Dr. Atiq is a professor of medicine and otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock and holds the position of president of the ACP for the 2023-2024 term.
Dr. Atiq has also served as president of the Arkansas Medical Society and on the state's medical board.
Steven Furr, MD. President of the American Academy of Family Physicians
Dr. Furr is the president of the AAFP for the 2023-2024 term. He has been treating patients for nearly four decades, including 25 years in obstetrics care, and is a co-founder of Family Medical Clinic of Jackson (Ala.).
Benjamin Hoffman, MD: President of the American Academy of Pediatrics
Dr. Hoffman is president of the AAP and treats patients as a general pediatrician at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Ore. There, he serves as vice-chair for community health and advocacy, director of the Oregon Center for Children and Youth with Special Health Needs and Director of the child injury prevention program.
Dr. Hoffman is also a professor of pediatrics at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.
Ronald Harter, MD. President of the American Society of Anesthesiology
Dr. Harter is president of the ASA for the 2023-2024 term and is a professor of anesthesiology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus. He served as president of the Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists in 2003.
Dr. Harter has also served in a variety of roles within the ASA, including speaker of the society's house of delegates.
