The Connecticut Office of Health Strategy has launched an inquiry into the acquisition of Rocky Hill-based Starling Physicians by VillageMD, according to a March 13 report from Hartford Business Journal.
Starling Physicians is a primary care and multispecialty physician group that currently operates more than 30 locations across Connecticut. The acquisition closed March 1 and was announced March 3.
However, Certificate of Need Supervisor Steven Lazarus told Hartford Business Journal neither parties involved in the transaction filed a merger application with OHS. The office is now launching an inquiry to determine whether a certificate of need and state approval is required.
State law requires a certificate of need when there is a transfer in ownership "of a large group practice to any entity other than a physician, or group of two or more physicians, legally organized in a partnership, professional corporation or limited liability company," the report said.
