Why physicians are depressed

Job burnout is the leading factor fueling depression among physicians, according to Medscape's 2024 "Physician Burnout and Depression Report."

The report surveyed 9,226 physicians across over 29 specialties between July 5 and Oct. 9.

Here are the factors physicians identified in the report as affecting their depression (Note: Respondents could vote for more than one option):

  • Job burnout: 72%
  • Physician's responsibilities: 44%
  • Finances: 31%
  • World events: 31%
  • Family issues: 24%
  • Insecurity: 19%
  • Health: 14%
  • Romantic relationships: 14%
  • Personality: 14%
  • Other: 7%
