State superlatives: Best and worst states for physicians, nurses, healthcare access and more

Here are the best and worst states across a variety of metrics that Becker's has reported on since July 17:

  1. Maine is the top state for healthcare access.
  2. Hawaii is the worst state for physicians and nurses.
  3. Montana is the best state for physicians.
  4. Washington is the best state for nurses.
  5. Iowa was found to be the best state to retire in 2023.
  6. Alaska is the worst state to retire.
  7. California has the most active physicians of any state.
  8. Nevada is the state with the lowest projected physician competition by 2023.
  9. Minnesota has the most affordable healthcare in the U.S.
  10. New Hampshire has the most nursing-job openings per capita while Utah has the fewest.
  11. Utah is the top state for healthcare outcomes.
  12. Massachusetts and Hawaii are tied for the states with the most residents leading "healthy lives."
  13. Massachusetts is the top state for healthcare access and affordability.
  14. Massachusetts is the top state in terms of health system performance.
  15. Vermont is the best state to work in.
  16. Texas is the worst state to work in.
