The highest, lowest-paying states for physicians by specialty

Mississippi is the highest-paying state for primary care physicians and nonsurgical specialists, according to the Medical Group Management Association's "Provider Compensation and Productivity Data Report."

The report, released May 28, included 2023 data from more than 211,000 physicians and advanced practice providers. 

Primary care physicians:

Highest-paying states:

  1. Mississippi
  2. South Dakota
  3. New Mexico
  4. South Carolina
  5. Montana

Lowest-paying states:

  1. Alaska
  2. Wyoming 
  3. Maryland
  4. Washington, D.C.
  5. Rhode Island

Surgical specialists:

Highest-paying states:

  1. South Carolina
  2. Alabama
  3. Mississippi
  4. Florida 
  5. South Dakota

Lowest-paying states:

  1. Wyoming
  2. Montana
  3. Kentucky
  4. Washington, D.C.
  5. Georgia

Nonsurgical specialists:

Highest-paying states:

  1. Mississippi
  2. New Mexico
  3. South Dakota
  4. Florida
  5. Texas

Lowest-paying states:

  1. Alaska
  2. Washington, D.C.
  3. Kentucky
  4. Missouri
  5. Iowa

Advanced practice providers:
