15 physicians retiring in 2024

Here are 15 physician leaders that have announced plans to retire or entered retirement in 2024, as reported by Becker's since Jan. 29:

1. Matthew Upton, MD, retired as chief medical officer at West Virginia University Medicine’s Thomas Hospital in South Charleston after 29 years at Thomas Hospitals.

2. Michael Rousse, MD, retired as chief medical officer at St. Johnsbury-based Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital. Dr. Rousse has worked at the hospital for 20 years and was appointed CMO in 2019.

3. Prabodh Mehta, MD, a cardiologist at Baptist Health Medical Group Cardiology in Elizabethtown, Ky., retired after 34 years in the field.

4. Marschall Runge, MD, PhD, shared plans to retire as executive vice president of medical affairs and CEO of Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Michigan Medicine and dean of University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor once his contract ends on June 30, 2025.

5. Robert Grossman, MD, will retire as CEO of New York City-based NYU Langone Health and dean of NYU Grossman School of Medicine in New York City in August 2025 after 18 years with the health system.

6. Steven Packer, MD, president and CEO of Montage Health in Monterey, Calif., shared plans to retire next spring after 25 years in his role. 

7. Rod Hochman, MD, will retire as president and CEO of Providence at the end of 2024, capping off a 45-year career in healthcare.

8. Gregory Eaton, MD, and Mary Alton, MD, two cardiology leaders at OhioHealth's Mansfield Hospital, retired following more than 20 years with the system. The married couple have been with the hospital since 2001.

9. Michael Ciccotti, MD, an orthopedic surgeon with Philadelphia-based Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, retired from his role as head team physician and medical director of the Philadelphia Phillies after 30 years with the team.

10. David Riedel, MD, a gastroenterologist, retired following 44 years at Alton (Ill.) Memorial Hospital.

11. Kevin Yingling, RPh, MD, will retire as CEO of Huntington, W.V.-based Marshall Health Network in 2025. 

12. Loren Hamel, MD, retired as president of Grand Rapids-based Corewell Health in Southwest Michigan.

13. Brian Hainline, MD, senior vice president and chief medical officer of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, retired after more than a decade in the role.

14. James Andrews, MD, retired at the age of 81 after more than 50 years in medicine.
