CMS has published its list of teaching hospitals that were awarded new Medicare-supported graduate medical education positions.
CMS will add 200 residency positions to the selected hospitals, according to a Nov. 21 news release by the Association of American Medical Colleges. Approximately 70% of the new positions will go to primary care and psychiatry residency programs.
The new positions are being awarded through Section 126 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act 2021. In 2021 and 2023 year-end spending packages, Congress voted to expand Medicare support for GME. This is the third distribution of positions provided by CAA 2021, and CMS has awarded half of the 1,200 total positions made available under the legislation.
In this round of distributions, 109 teaching hospitals across 33 states received new residency slots, which will go into effect July 1.
