Nearly 60% of physicians care for patients in a practice that is an accountable care organization, according to a recent survey from the American Medical Association.
The survey, which polled roughly 3,500 physicians, also found that over a third (34.4%) of physicians were in a practice that was an accredited or recognized medical home in 2022, up from 32.3% in 2020 and 23.7% in 2014.
Meanwhile, the number of physicians in accountable care organizations has grown from 44% in 2016 to 57.8% in 2022. Participation in commercial ACOs was the most common in 2022, at 45.1% — up from 42.7% in 2020.
Medicare ACOs were the second most popular, at 38.1% in 2022, and 36.7% in 2020, while Medicaid ACOs came in third, at 30% in 2022 and 29.5% in 2020, the survey found.
