Physicians reported that administrative burdens are the biggest contributor to the ongoing provider shortage in Doximity's "Physician Compensation Report" for 2024, published May 23.
Doximity surveyed more than 1,100 U.S. physicians between February and March about the effects of the physician shortage on patient care and physician well-being.
Here are the nine most-cited factors physicians reported are perpetuating physician shortages:

- Diminished supply of physicians (66%)
- Staffing challenges (65%)
- Greater patient needs (56%)
- Lack of care team support (42%)
- Healthcare consolidation (39%)
- Increased subspecialization (36%)
- Delayed or inadequate preventative care (29%)
- Reduced clinical hours (19%)
