The 2023 Main Residency Match broke a record for offering the largest number of total positions — 40,375 certified spots, according to a March 17 blog post by the American Medical Association.
Here are five more stats to know:
- The spots were an increase of 1,170 positions from 2022, with almost half of the positions in primary care.
- More than 81.1 percent of all active applicants matched to postgraduate year one.
- A total of 42,952 applicants certified the rank order list, and 48,156 total applicants applied for the match program.
- The primary care positions filled at a rate of 94.2 percent — a steady rate from last year.
- Orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, diagnostic radiology and thoracic surgery were the specialties with 30 or more positions that filled all of the available positions, according to the report.
