Why Mississippi is the worst state for healthcare

Mississippi was ranked as the worst state for healthcare in an analysis by financial management website WalletHub.

The "Best & Worst States for Health Care" list for 2024, published July 29, assessed all 50 states and Washington, D.C., across 44 metrics comparing three major facets of healthcare: cost, accessibility and outcomes. 

Mississippi was ranked 25th on care costs metrics, 39th for access and 51st for outcomes, giving it the lowest ranking overall.

Each state was given an overall score out of 100, and Mississippi earned a total score of 46.01. By comparison, Minnesota — the top-ranked state — earned 67.38.
