The main reasons patients file malpractice suits against dermatologists: 7 things to know

Of the malpractice suits filed against dermatologists between 2011 and 2022, half were related to accidental injuries, according to an April 24 report from Medscape.

Here are six additional things to know about medical malpractice suits filed against dermatologists, according Medscape's report on findings from a study presented at the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery annual conference:

1. The second most common malpractice lawsuit cause was incorrect or delayed diagnoses.

2. Defendants in dermatology malpractice cases are more likely to be male. In an analysis of 54 cases, 35 involved a male defendant.

3. Anywhere between 75 and 99 percent of physicians will face a malpractice suit by the age of 65.

4. Most cases (91 percent) involve dermatologists in private practice rather than academic settings.

5. Of 54 analyzed cases, 30 were dismissed prior to trial.

6. Payout information was only available in five cases, and it ranged from $15,000 to nearly $2 million.
