Emergency medicine specialists are facing the highest rates of burnout this year, according to a July 9 report from the American Medical Association.
In compiling the report, the AMA surveyed more than 12,400 physicians across 31 states from 81 health systems and organizations in 2023.
General physician burnout is on the decline, with burnout rates falling below 50% for the first time since 2020, the organization said.
Here are the six physician specialties with the highest burnout rates, per the AMA:
1. Emergency medicine: 56.5%
2. Internal medicine: 51.4%
3. Obstetrics and gynecology: 51.2%
4. Family medicine: 51%
5. Pediatrics: 46.9%
6. Hospital medicine: 44%
