Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing a second physician for allegedly violating state law by providing gender-affirming care to minors, The Texas Tribune reported Oct. 30.
Here are five things to know about the lawsuit:
1. The case was brought against Hector Granados, MD, an El Paso, Texas-based pediatric endocrinologist accused of prescribing puberty blockers and hormone therapy to more than 20 minors to treat gender dysphoria.
2. This is the second case of its kind in the U.S., following gender-affirming care bans for minors passed by Texas and 25 other states last year. A similar lawsuit was filed against another Texas physician Oct. 21.
3. The lawsuit alleges that Dr. Granados violated SB 14 and claims he committed fraud by continuing to provide puberty blockers for gender transition while documenting the treatment as necessary for precocious puberty in medical records.
4. Dr. Granados is accused of treating patients aged 12-17, with most being 15 or older.
5. Dr. Granados helped open El Paso's first clinic for transgender youth in August 2015 through the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and now works in private practice.
