Physicians and Medicaid: 6 things to know

Almost 30% of physicians are not at all supportive of accepting additional Medicaid patients into their practice, according to Medscape's 2024 "Doctors Evaluate Medicare and Medicaid Report," published July 12.

Here are five additional notes on physicians and Medicaid in 2024:

1. Ten percent of physicians said they are very supportive of accepting more Medicaid patients, while 22% are supportive, 19% are somewhat supportive and 21% are slightly supportive.

2. A majority of physicians said they find meeting prior authorization rules for Medicaid billing at least occasionally challenging. Twenty-five percent of physicians find meeting rules extremely challenging while 34% find it somewhat challenging and 26% find it occasionally challenging.

3. The largest challenge for physicians dealing with Medicaid is reimbursement rates (66%). Additional challenges (program rules, denied claims and costs of recoding/submitting claims) all ranked below 15%.

4. Thirty-seven percent of physicians said they believe their state's Medicaid reimbursement rates are low compared to other states, while 38% believe they are on par with other states.

5. More than half of physicians said the time states take to analyze Medicaid claims is a moderate issue (49%) or a serious issue (19%).
