Physician sentenced to 22 years for overprescription

A Pennsylvania physician has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for unlawfully prescribing oxycodone, fentanyl and methadone to three patients, Fox affiliate WOLF reported Feb. 12.

Martin Evers, MD, was a primary care physician in Milford, Pa., and an employee of Suffren, N.Y.-based Bon Secours Charity Health System.

In December 2022, he was found guilty on 71 counts of unlawful distribution of controlled substances. One count involved unlawful distribution to a patient in February 2019, resulting in her death.

Additionally, court evidence included a witness from Walmart Global Investigations who said the company issued a nationwide ban against filling any narcotics prescriptions from Dr. Evers.

He must pay $50,000 in fines and is no longer licensed, the report said.
