Hospitalist pay increased at a much higher rate than it did for U.S. physicians in general in 2022, according to an Aug. 2 compensation report from Medscape.
Here are nine things to know about hospitalist compensation:
1. Hospitalist primary care providers earned an average of $274,000, while specialists earned $343,000 and all hospitalists earned $316,000.
2. The average incentive bonus for hospitalists was $38,000 in 2022.
3. About 21 percent of hospitalists had annual raises cut because of cutbacks in the work world.
4. Male hospitalists earn an average of $342,000, while female hospitalists earn $281,000.
5. About 72 percent of hospitalist OB-GYN specialists are female.
6. Half of hospitalists feel fairly compensated, while half do not.
7. About 31 percent of hospitalists have a net worth of less than $500,000, while 25 percent have a net worth of $2 million to $5 million.
8. Hospitalists work an average of 54 hours a week.
9. About 49 percent of hospitalists take extra work outside of their daily jobs.
