Florida physician accused of stealing hurricane donations

A Jacksonville, Fla., physician has been accused of stealing thousands of dollars' worth of donations intended for Hurricane Helene victims in Buncombe County, Fla., and selling some to a pawn shop, Queen City News reported Nov. 5. 

Mark Smith, MD, was found by police in a truck with more than $12,000 in donations stolen from Hearts Hurt, along with more than $2,000 worth of property belonging to the owner of the nonprofit, the report said. 

Dr. Smith has been charged with breaking and entering, larceny, obtaining property by false pretense, trespassing during a state of emergency, failure to return hired motor vehicle, injury to personal property, felony larceny and failure to return rental property. He is being held on $60,000 bond.
