Female physicians more likely to suffer burnout

Though general physician burnout is on the decline in 2024, female physicians are still more likely to experience burnout symptoms than their male counterparts, according to an Aug. 6 report from the American Medical Association.

The AMA surveyed more than 12,400 physicians across 31 states from 81 health systems and organizations in 2023 to determine physician engagement, satisfaction, stress and burnout rates.

While 48.2% of physicians reported experiencing at least one burnout symptom, down from 53% in 2022, female physicians reported much higher rates of burnout, reaching 54.5%, compared to 42% of men.

Female physicians were also less likely to feel valued than their male counterparts, at 45.8% and 56.3%, respectively.

Additionally, 71.7% of female physicians said they felt satisfied with their jobs, compared with 73.9% of their male colleagues.

However, fewer female physicians said they intend to leave their current roles, with 33.2% planning a departure compared to 35.9% of men.
