CHI Health and Creighton University partner to aid in rural physician shortage

Omaha, Neb.-based CHI Health has joined Creighton University's School of Medicine, also in Omaha, to create two new residency programs to aid in urban and rural medical settings, the News Press reported Jan. 5.

The program is now accepting applications, and applicants will be selected in March.

"The need for physicians practicing internal medicine and psychiatry continues to grow in our rural communities," Cary Ward, MD, chief medical officer of CHI Health, told the publication. "As the largest healthcare provider in Nebraska, CHI Health is proud to partner with Creighton University on these rural track programs to train great physicians — many of whom we hope will continue to serve these communities in the years to come."

Accepted residents will begin at CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy in Omaha. The second half of the residency will be spent at CHI Health Good Samaritan in Kearney, Neb.

Ninety of Nebraska's 93 counties are experiencing a healthcare staffing shortage. Thirty-four percent of the state's population live in rural areas. Both statistics have led to the partnership, according to the publication.
