As social media continues to grow in popularity among all age groups, it can be both a help and a hindrance for physicians.
While many physicians have benefited from social media for advertising themselves and their practices, others have seen negative impacts.
About 55 percent of physicians have reported seeing other physicians "behave inappropriately" online, and in some instances, physicians have even lost their licenses due to inappropriate online behavior.
An Oct. 3 report from Medscape has outlined a few social media tips for physicians to avoid running into trouble online.
Eight social media guidelines for physicians to remember:
1. You are representing your profession and practice, even when posting on personal accounts.
2. Do not post from the operating room, emergency department or any medical space.
3. Check with your employer before posting to see if they have any social media rules or guidelines.
4. Never use social media to badmouth healthcare organizations or other professionals.
5. Do not use social media to dispense medical advice.
6. Steer clear of hot-button issues, including politics and religion.
7. Protect patient privacy when posting.
8. Be careful how and with whom you engage online.
