5 future physicians who have competed for Olympic titles

The athlete-to-physician pipeline is not an uncommon one, with several football players and sports stars going on to attend medical school. 

As the 2024 Olympics kick off in Paris, here are a number of future physicians who will either be attending the events, hoped to attend the events or have attended previous Olympic games, according to a July 25 report from the Association of American Medical Colleges:

1. Katharine Holmes, a third-year medical school student at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, is competing in the 2024 Olympics on the U.S. women's fencing team. This is Ms. Holmes' third Olympic games. 

2. Jake Foster, a first-year medical student at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin, competed in the 2024 Olympic trials to join Team USA Swimming. 

3. Derek Maas, a second-year medical student at NYU Grossman School of Medicine in New York City, competed in the 2024 Olympic trials to join Team USA Swimming. 

4. Megan Clark, a fourth-year medical student at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, attended the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for track and field and pole vaulting. 

5. Meridith Kisting, a first-year medical student at Carle Illinois College of Medicine at the University of Illinois in Urbana, attended the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for rowing.
