Here are three groups of medical professionals that have announced plans to or held strikes, as reported by Becker's since Sept. 7:
1. Members of the Office and Professional Employees International Union Local 40 began a three-day strike at Ascension Providence Rochester (Mich.) Hospital. The union represents about 270 nurses and radiology technologists. The hospital is part of St. Louis-based Ascension. The union said members specifically seek a staffing matrix and staffing committee; manageable on-call assignments; and competitive pay and retroactive pay to recruit and retain staff, among other asks.
2. Roughly two dozen people were arrested in a civil disobedience action in front of the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center in Hollywood after a Labor Day demonstration. Healthcare workers held the rally and march to call for improved working conditions and draw attention to their concerns over issues such as pay and staffing. During the march, police declared an unlawful assembly.
3. Members of the California Nurses Association held a one-day strike at Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital. The union represents more than 250 nurses at the hospital, which is part of Cedars-Sinai, a nonprofit academic healthcare organization based in Los Angeles. The nurses' contract with the hospital expired Feb. 28, and the two sides began negotiating a new labor contract in early 2023.
