3 main causes of resident physician burnout

Mark Linzer, MD, has surveyed over 20,000 health professionals nationwide on drivers of physician burnout, finding three key factors that often lead to resident burnout, according to a Feb. 15 report from the American Medical Association.

The three key factors are sleep impairment, a lack of program recognition of the resident, and outside interruptions and distractions.

Other burnout factors include poor teammates, lack of workload control, chaotic work environments and time pressures.

Dr. Linzer has determined interventions that may mitigate resident stress, including coverage for major life events, a newsletter celebrating resident achievement, removal of after-hours pagers, extra days off and care packages for teams.
