Here are three recent settlements involving physicians, as reported by Becker's since June 7:
1. The Iowa Board of Medicine agreed to reinstate the license of Venkateswara Karuparthy, MD, a pain physician in Bettendorf, Iowa, who was charged with sexually abusing a patient in 2018. The board agreed to settle other, undisclosed charges made against Dr. Karuparthy in June, and Dr. Karuparthy's license will be on probation for one year and subject to board monitoring. He has also agreed to having a licensed medical professional present for all patient examinations, treatments and consultations while his license is on probation.
2. Nehal Modh, MD, the president and sole owner of Progressive Pain Management in Festus, Mo., will pay $1.2 million to resolve allegations that he and his company knowingly submitted false claims to Medicare and Medicaid.
3. Sheldon Rabin, MD, a New York City-based ophthalmologist and his ophthalmology practice will pay $2.4 million to resolve allegations he submitted claims for medically unnecessary procedures, among other allegations, in violation of the False Claims Act.
