Dr. Hesham Sadek, PhD, has been awarded the outstanding investigator award by the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Sadek is a professor of internal medicine, biophysics and molecular biology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, according to a Jan. 30 news release from the hospital. He is also the associate director of the Hamon Center for Regenerative Science and Medicine at UTSW.
The award is given annually to physician-scientists who have made major contributions to heart research. The grant from the award totals $7.5 million over seven years, which Dr. Sadek said in the release he will use to identify molecular mechanisms to regulate the heart's ability to regenerate.
