The National Football League announced a leaguewide expansion of its NFL Diversity in Sports Medicine Pipeline Initiative.
The initiative was developed through a partnership between the NFL, NFL Physicians Society and the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society, according to a May 22 news release.
The program, now in its second year, offers the opportunity for medical students to complete a clinical rotation with NFL club medical staff. The inaugural class featured 14 students from four historically Black college and university medical schools across eight NFL clubs.
The 2023 program has more than doubled to match diverse students from 19 medical schools. The initiative aims to connect diverse students with an interest in sports medicine to exposure and opportunities in the field, the release said.
