Illinois physician to join NASA mission

Illinois emergency medicine physician Nathan Jones, MD, has been selected for a yearlong study with NASA, according to an April 21 report from ABC affiliate WICS.

Dr. Jones will participate in the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog, which aims to simulate what NASA crew members could experience in a mission to Mars. For this study, he and three other volunteers will spend a year in a 3D-printed habitat.

While in this habitat, the participants will perform a variety of mission activities, including simulated spacewalks, exercise and crop growth. Dr. Jones, who found the opportunity through an advertisement, will serve as medical officer for the mission, which begins in June in Houston.
