46 health system CEOs who have left their roles in 2023

Here are 46 CEOs who have left or announced plans to leave their positions that Becker's has reported on so far in 2023:

  1. Nancy Hollingsworth, MSN, RN, will retire as president and CEO of Fresno, Calif.-based Saint Agnes Medical Center as the hospital combines into one regional ministry with Saint Alphonsus Health System in Boise, Idaho.
  2. Leslie Barnes will retire as president and CEO of Pueblo, Colo.-based Parkview Health System, effective May 31. 
  3. Richard Isaacs, MD, left his roles as CEO and executive director of the Permanente Medical Group and president and CEO of the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group — both part of Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente — to serve as dean of California Northstate University's medical school.
  4. Troy Greer stepped away from his role as president and CEO of Columbia, Mo.-based Boone Health to move closer to family. 
  5. Bob Sutton will step down as president and CEO of Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Avera Health for health reasons on Sept. 30.
  6. Mike Geeslin will step down as president and CEO of Austin, Texas-based Central Health by the end of 2023. 
  7. Brian Herwig retired as CEO of Perry County Memorial Hospital in Tell City, Ind. 
  8. B. Konard Jones will retire as president and CEO of Fairfield, Calif.-based NorthBay Health on Dec. 31.
  9. Gregg Olson retired as CEO of Rochelle (Ill.) Community Hospital on March 31.
  10. Garett May left his role as CEO of Merit Health Natchez (Miss.) to serve as chief operating officer of Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville, Ala. Both hospitals are under the umbrella of Community Health Systems, based in Franklin, Tenn. 
  11. Jonathan Nalli left his role as CEO and ministry market executive of Indianapolis-based Ascension St. Vincent and senior vice president of St. Louis-based Ascension.
  12. Perry Gay resigned as president and CEO of Logansport (Ind.) Memorial Hospital. David Ameen, who helmed the hospital from 2010 to 2015, left retirement to serve as interim CEO. 
  13. Steven Salyer resigned as CEO of Watsonville (Calif.) Community Hospital on April 10 for family reasons.
  14.  Kimberly Boynton stepped down as president and CEO of Syracuse, N.Y.-based Crouse Health. She planned to leave Crouse once a proposed merger with State University of New York Upstate Medical University was completed, although the deal was scrapped in February.
  15. Barbara Nichols, RN, retired as CEO of Corry (Pa.) Memorial Hospital after 23 years in the role. 
  16.  Michael Zenn stepped down as CEO of University of Illinois Hospital and Clinics in May and moved into the new role of senior advisor for enterprise strategic initiatives within the university's office of the vice chancellor for health affairs.
  17.  Shawn Morrow left his role as CEO of Show Low, Ariz.-based Summit Healthcare following a mutual agreement with the health system's governing board. 
  18.  Guy Hudson stepped down as CEO of Seattle-based Swedish Health Services and chief executive of Renton, Wash.-based Providence's north division.
  19.  Lori Herndon, BSN, RN, will retire as president and CEO of Atlantic City, N.J.-based AtlantiCare at the end of June after 40 years with the organization.
  20.  Jay Finnegan retired as CEO of HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital in Port St. Lucie, Fla., part of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare, in April.
  21. Deborah Wilson retired as CEO of Lawrence (Mass.) General Hospital.
  22. Joseph "Jody" White retired as CEO of Lowell (Mass.) General Hospital.
  23. Scott Kelly retired as president and CEO of Medford, Ore.-based Asante Health following a four-month leave of absence for health reasons.
  24. Steve Johnson retired as president and CEO of Rockledge, Fla.-based Health First.
  25. Frank Calamari retired as president and CEO of New York City-based Calvary Hospital on March 10 after 36 years in the role. 
  26. Gary Honts retired as CEO of Indio, Calif.-based JFK Memorial Hospital. 
  27.  David Henry left his role as CEO of Jackson, Miss.-based Merit Health Central to serve Merit Health Madison, about 25 miles away, amid recent service closures at Central. 
  28. Hank Milius, president and CEO of Muncie, Ind.-based Meridian Health Services, will retire at the end of 2023.
  29. John Snow resigned as CEO of Oxford, N.C.-based Granville Health System after more than four years in the role. 
  30.  David Elgarico resigned as CEO of Framingham, Mass.-based MetroWest Medical Center to return home to Oregon and be with his family. He assumed the role in July after serving three years as CEO of Quorum Health's McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center, based in Springfield, Ore.
  31.  Julie Miller-Phipps will retire in July as president of Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente's Southern California and Hawaii markets.
  32.  Scott Phillips resigned as acting CEO El Centro (Calif.) Regional Medical Center. He was a managing director for the hospital's management firm, Healthcare Management Partners, and stepped down after the firm issued the hospital a termination notice. 
  33.  Stan Holm is no longer president and CEO of Olathe (Kan.) Health now that the health system has become part of the University of Kansas Health System. 
  34.  Tony Keene left his position as CEO of Kirksville, Mo.-based Northeast Regional Medical Center. Dwayne Blaylock was named interim CEO. 
  35.  Dustin Greene exited his role as CEO of HCA's TriStar Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. He has accepted a role as CEO of Henderson, Texas-based QuickVisit Urgent Care. Mark Miller will take over as CEO of the hospital.
  36.  Mike Murrill stepped down as president and CEO of AdventHealth's Redmond, Ga., hospital and its Southeast region, which oversees hospitals in Georgia, Kentucky and North Carolina. Moving forward, separate CEOs will be named to AdventHealth Redmond and the Southeast region.
  37.  Gary Horan retired as president and CEO of Elizabeth, N.J.-based Trinitas Regional Medical Center, part of West Orange, N.J.-based RWJBarnabas Health.
  38.  Kevin Manemann left his role as CEO of Renton, Wash.-based Providence's South division. He has accepted a new position with Duarte, Calif.-based City of Hope.
  39.  Kevin Slavin will retire as president and CEO of Paterson, N.J.-based St. Joseph's Health at the end of 2023. He spent nine years in the role.
  40.  Scott Boston, MD, resigned as president and CEO of Jacksonville (Ill.) Memorial Hospital. Trevor Huffman, the hospital's director of ambulatory services, was named the new CEO. 
  41.  Scott Cihak, president and CEO of Nashville, Tenn.-based TriStar Centennial Medical Center, resigned for personal reasons after 31 years with HCA Healthcare.
  42.  Ashley McClellan resigned as CEO of HCA Midwest Health's Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo. CFO John Krajicek was named to the interim role. 
  43.  Don Caruso, MD, president and CEO of Keene, N.H.-based Cheshire Medical Center, retired.
  44.  Steve Dietlin retired as CEO of Oceanside, Calif.-based Tri-City Medical Center.
  45.  Carole Peet, MSN, RN, stepped down from her role as president and CEO of Yakima (Wash.) Valley Memorial Hospital.
  46. Joe Hugar is no longer president and CEO of Campbellsville, Ky.-based Taylor Regional Hospital.
