Student loans are resuming: What physicians need to know

Student loan payments officially resumed Oct. 1.

Here are four tips and things to know as payments resume, according to an Oct. 12 article from the American Medical Association:

  1. Although payments began Oct. 1, outstanding student loans started accruing interest again Sept. 1.
  2. Physicians may be eligible for the Saving on a Valuable Education Plan, which determines your monthly payment based on your current earnings and could take into account whether an individual is a resident or a fellow.
  3. Physicians should include their student loans into necessities in their budget, along with other monthly expenses like rent, car payments, utilities and groceries.
  4. Physicians should continue to keep an eye out for other opportunities for loan relief, such as a public service loan forgiveness plan.
