Forty-eight percent of RNs do not supplement their income, according to Medscape's "RN/LPN Compensation Report 2023."
The report, published Sept. 29, included 3,076 RNs who practice in the U.S. Their responses were collected between April 20 to June 12.
Here is how RNs are supplementing their income:
Worked extra shifts/overtime, weekends and/or extra holidays: 32 percent
Acted as a preceptor: 13 percent
Took charge nurse responsibilities: 12 percent
Worked on-call shifts: 12 percent
Worked a second job or another income-producing activity (non-nursing): 10 percent
Taught classes: 6 percent
Other: 8 percent
Did not supplement: 48 percent
