Fifty-two percent of female physicians said they don't feel fairly compensated, according to Medscape's "Female Physician Compensation Report 2023."
The report was compiled from a survey of 10,011 respondents across more than 29 specialties.
Here are seven other things to know about female physician compensation from the report:
- Women reported $300,000 in average annual earnings, compared to $386,000 by their male counterparts.
- The gender pay gap decreased to 29%, compared to 32% in 2021 and 34% in 2020.
- Female physicians between the ages of 45 and 49 earned the most, averaging $311,000 annually.
- Female physicians make the most in hospital settings, averaging $315,000 annually.
- Fifty-seven percent of primary care physicians and 56% of specialists reported qualifying for incentive bonuses.
- Female primary care physicians and specialists earned $29,000 and $46,000 annually in incentive bonuses, respectively.
- Self-employed female physicians earn more than their employed counterparts, averaging $305,000 and $299,000, respectively.
