7 compensation updates in August physicians should know

Here are seven compensation updates Becker's reported in August that physicians should know:

  1. Pediatricians average $251,000 in compensation annually.
  2. Thirty-one percent of employed physicians' compensation is structured by salary only.
  3. Emergency medicine specialists earned an average of $350,000 in 2018. In 2023, that figure increased to $352,000, an increase of 0.57 percent – the lowest five-year salary increase among 29 specialties.
  4. Urologists earned an average of $373,000 in 2018. In 2023, that figure grew to $506,000, an increase of 36 percent — the highest five-year salary increase among 29 specialties.
  5. Radiologists were the highest paid among the top five most requested providers in recruitment searches in the Midwest, with an average salary of $495,600.
  6. Consulting was the top source for a secondary income among physicians in 2022.
  7. The national average salary among internal medicine physicians in the U.S. is $225,270.
