Enrollment in Medicare Advantage has grown over the last 20 years following the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003, which renamed the program from private Medicare plans.
Here are five Medicare Advantage numbers to know, according to data published Aug. 9 by KFF:
- 51% of eligible Medicare beneficiaries were enrolled in Medicare Advantage in 2023.
- Medicare Advantage enrollment increased by 32 percentage points between 2007 and 2023, rising from 19% to 51%.
- 30.8 million Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans.
- Sixty-four percent of Medicare Advantage participants are enrolled in plans generally available to all beneficiaries for individual enrollment.
- 5.4 million Medicare Advantage enrollees are part of a group plan for retirees through an employer or union.
