The number of years that a physician has been in practice could correlate with their risk of burnout, a recent survey from the American Medical Association found.
The AMA Organizational Biopsy survey collected 12,400 responses from physicians across 31 states and 81 health systems. The 2023 survey evaluated six performance indicators, including job satisfaction, job stress, burnout, intent to leave an organization, feeling valued by an organization and total hours spent per week on work-related activities.
Here is what 2023 AMA data shows about physician burnout rates per years that a physician has been out of residency or fellowship training (compared with 2022 data):
One to five years: 46.7%—down from 54%.
Six to10 years: 55.1%—down from 61%.
11 to 15 years: 55.3%—down from 59%.
16 to 20 years: 50.8%—down from 56%.
20 or more years: 41.3%—down from 46%.
