Kansas surgeon loses license in wake of $16M fraud conviction

An Overland Park, Kan., physician had his license to practice medicine revoked after pleading guilty to a telemedicine scheme that defrauded Medicare out of about $16 million.

Gautam Jayaswal, MD, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud in May 2023.

After his felony conviction, the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts revoked his medical and surgical license on Feb. 15, according to board documents, which he appealed. The board overruled Dr. Jayaswal's objection due to his felony conviction and cited that it does not have "clear and convincing" evidence that he does not pose a threat to the public and has been sufficiently rehabilitated.

The board issued a final order upholding its previous decision to revoke Dr. Jayaswal's license July 15.
