What physicians should know about the CDC's plan to address burnout

The CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has launched Impact Wellbeing, a national campaign providing resources to hospital leaders that aim to address physician burnout and strengthen well-being.

The initiative follows recent data published by the CDC that found healthcare workers reported more days of poor mental health and were more likely to report burnout in 2022 than in 2018.

The campaign includes three resources for hospital leaders. The NIOSH Worker Well-Being Questionnaire can be used to check in on how a hospital's workforce is doing and identify ways to improve well-being, while the Leadership Storytelling Guide offers help for hospital leaders to talk publicly about getting help for their own mental health concerns, while encouraging staff to do the same.

Finally, the Total Worker Health Strategies offers training for front-line supervisors to help their staff balance their work and home responsibilities. The campaign also encourages hospital leaders to remove intrusive mental health questions on hospital credentialing applications.
