Physician-owned practices have lost 40% of support staff since 2019: Report

Physician-owned practices have experienced a 40 percent drop in support staff per physician since 2019, according to a recent report from the Medical Group Management Association.

The report found that physician-owned practices averaged 3.0 support staff per full-time equivalent (FTE) physician in 2022, down from 5.08 per physician in 2019. Of all settings, the most impacted were physician-owned primary care practices, which saw a decrease of more than three FTE support staff roles between 2019 and 2022.

Data from the 2023 MGMA "DataDive Cost and Revenue" report was pulled from more than 4,000 organizations spanning a variety of specialties and practice types.
