Bill banning noncompetes for primary care physicians clears Indiana house

Indiana state legislators have passed a weakened physician noncompete bill, according to an April 18 report from NPR affiliate WFYI.

The bill bans new noncompete agreements for primary care physicians but allows other physicians to be subjected to noncompetes. Indiana is one of the states with the most new physicians entering primary care, with over 27.2 percent of trainees joining the specialty.

Senate Bill 7 originally aimed to prohibit employers from placing employees under noncompete agreements after July 2023 but was weakened by the House Employment, Labor and Pensions Committee on April 11.
