Here are six areas for health systems to focus on to improve physician well-being and address burnout, according to a July 25 report from the American Medical Association:
- Health systems should evaluate physician well-being using an assessment tool to determine the best course of action.
- Health systems should establish a well-being committee or office, including creating a chief wellness officer position.
- Health systems should consider and track the amount of time providers spend using electronic health record systems outside of their scheduled work time.
- Health systems should promote leadership development among their staff so their providers are empowered and able to address burnout themselves as well.
- Health systems should measure teamwork metrics to ensure that the physician and management teams are working well together.
- Health systems should develop peer support programs to have a more immediate impact on physician and other provider well-being.
