Here are five recent efforts by universities, states and health systems to address the physician shortage that Becker's has reported on since June 22:
- Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kan., formed an admissions partnership with Kansas Health Science Center-Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Wichita with the goal of addressing the physician shortage.
- Thirty-four states offer student loan debt relief for physicians, with most offering programs for physicians that commit to practice in healthcare shortage areas.
- Bayhealth received $500,000 to support its graduate medical education programs and address the physician shortage in Kent County, Del.
- Banner Health and the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix expanded the Graduate Medical Education programs with 229 additional residency and fellowship programs.
- Missouri state lawmakers introduced legislation that seeks to address the physician shortage in the state by funding residencies.
