10 numbers from workforce reports physicians should know

Here are ten numbers to know from reports Becker's has covered since March 20:

  1. Neurosurgery is the highest paid physician speciality, with an average salary of $788,313 annually.
  2. Pediatric endocrinology is the lowest paid physician specialty, with an average annual salary of $218,266 annually.
  3. 30% of physicians are likely to pursue side gigs to offset economic pressures such as inflation and Medicare payment cuts.
  4. 71% of physicians have taken or would consider taking pay cuts for more autonomy or work-life balance.
  5. The number of physicians taking short-term locum tenens assignments has increased by 88% since 2015.
  6. Physicians saw a 2.4% decline in pay in 2022.
