Why this physician is excited about consolidation

Consolidation is a hot topic in healthcare, but what does it mean for the future of physicians?

James Leavitt, MD, director of clinical quality and outcomes for Gastro Health, spoke with Becker's to discuss the healthcare trends he is most excited about.

Note: This response has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

Dr. James Leavitt: The consolidation that's attached to physician growth — physician consolidation — I'm very excited about that. I'm a little nervous about some of the other consolidation and what it'll do to healthcare. But physician consolidation I'm very excited and bullish on for a number of reasons.

Physicians have to consolidate if we're going to be the people who drive healthcare reform. We're the best advocates of patient care. It's not insurance companies, it's not hospitals — it's doctors, and physicians have to lead that reform. We're not going to do it if we're not consolidated.
