West Virginia has been named the state most stressed about medical bills, with nearly a fourth of its population having medical debt in collections.
Its ratio is close to twice the national average, which sits at 12.6 percent, according to research conducted by Florida Personal Injury Lawyers Anidjar & Levine based on data from the Urban Institute Data Catalog.
Here are the 10 states with the most medical debt and the percentage of the population with medical debt in collections:

2. South Carolina: 22.26 percent
3. Oklahoma: 21.46 percent
4. North Carolina: 20.29 percent
5. Texas: 18.82 percent
6. Louisiana: 18.06 percent
7. Arkansas: 17.78 percent
8. Tennessee: 17.63 percent
9. Georgia: 17.33 percent
10. Kentucky: 17.11 percent
