Texas sues third physician over gender-affirming care

Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing a Dallas physician for illegally providing gender-affirming care to more than a dozen children, marking the third lawsuit over transgender care for minors in the state.

According to a Nov. 8 news release from the attorney general's office, Brett Cooper, MD, of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Campus in Dallas, prescribed hormone replacement therapy to minors as recently as Sept. 25, a violation of Texas law SB 14. The state alleges that Dr. Cooper falsified medical and billing records to conceal the nature of the prescriptions.

SB 14 was passed in September 2023 and upheld by the Texas Supreme Court in June, which prohibits "gender transition" medical interventions such as surgeries, puberty blockers and hormone replacement therapy for minors.
